Taj Mahal in Agra
One of the most popular tourist spots in the country, Taj Mahal is a white mausoleum built by Shah Jahan. It is located in Agra and is considered to be the finest specimen of Mughal architecture. This majestic monument is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This magnificent citadel was built around the later part of the 16th century by Mughal Emperor Akbar. This crescent-shaped fort with high inner walls consists of fantastic Mughal structures known as the Diwan-i-Khaas, Sheesh Mahal and Jodha Bai’s Palace. According to UNESCO the site was visited in 2001 by as many as 2 million people, which included over 200,000 visitors from abroad.
Another excellent place to visit in Agra, the Jama Masjid or “Friday Mosque” is one of the bigger mosques in the country. It was constructed in 1648 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan who dedicated it to his dear daughter Jahanara Begum.
Located very close to the Mehtab Bagh, Gyarah Sidi refers to eleven steps looking over the astrological observatory of Mughal Emperor Humayun. Only remains of this observatory now exist, and can be viewed as a precursor to the huge observatories at Delhi and Jaipur, referred to as ‘Jantar Mantar’. It is located on the banks of River Yamuna in Agra.
Literally translated as “Garden of Mercy”, it is the sacred place of Sant Satguru – the 8th leader of the Radhaswami Faith. It is a scientific cum spiritual campus and is also the place where the famous Dayalbagh Educational Institute is situated.

You can take a bus or rail route to visit these places. You can board a train from the Firozabad Railway Station or the Tundla Junction Railway Station, although the latter will take you to Agra very easily. By train, the distance of 40 kms takes about 50 minutes to cover. You may also take a bus to travel to Agra; a number of inter-state bus services are available in Uttar Pradesh to take you to the city from Firozabad. It is best to visit these places from October to March, although in the months of December and January you would need to carry woolen clothes along. These two months are quite chilly and you must ensure that you do not fall sick any way, which is the last thing you would want to happen during a weekend vacation.
