National Chambal Sanctuary – Located in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh in North India, this spot is also known as National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary. This is a protected area designated for endangered ‘gharial’ or crocodiles. It also houses the endangered Ganges Dolphin and the red-crowned roof turtle.
Saman Sanctuary – It is located in western Uttar Pradesh, close to the Agra airport and the Mainpuri railway junction. Spread over a 5 sq. km area, it is home for a large number of birds, including migratory ones, as well as other animals such as hare, mongoose and jackal. It is a paradise for nature and animal lovers and is ideal to visit from November to February.
Rani Moosi Ki Chhatri – It is located in Alwar, Rajasthan and can be visited within a short distance from Firozabad. This majestic cenotaph depicts court scenes and mythological tales in gold leaf paintings. It is a grand specimen of Indo-Islamic style of architecture.
Jaswant Singh Ki Chhatri – It is a dome-shaped cenotaph located in Rajwara, Balkeshwar in Agra. This beautiful spot is situated along the banks of River Yamuna and is now deemed as a National monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) which also maintains it.
Buland Darwaza – It is located in Fatehpur Sikri, just 46 kms away from Firozabad. Literally translated as “High Gate”, this lofty gateway was constructed by Mughal Emperor Akbar to commemorate his victory over the state that is now known as Gujarat.
Mariyam’s Tomb – It is a famous mausoleum in Agra and was built by Emperor Akbar in the memory of his wife Mariyam Zamani. This tomb is noted for its excellent carvings.
Panch Mahal – Located in Fatehpur Sikri, this royal five-storey palace has as many as 84 columns and was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar as a pleasure palace. The emperor used the palace mainly for entertainment purposes. It might have been a place for musical concerts and other types of entertainment. The palace stands close to the quarters of women or Zenana quarters. You can visit the top terraces that provided a beautiful place for queens and princesses to sit and enjoy the scenic beauty of the town and the fortifications.
All the spots mentioned above can be visited from Firozabad by road or rail route. You can board trains running regularly from the Firozabad Railway Station. If you wish to visit the Saman Sanctuary in Agra, taking a train from the Tundla Junction Railway Station can be your quickest mode of transport. The inter-state bus services in Uttar Pradesh can be availed to reach the various spots by road. It is best to visit these places during October-March when the weather is cool and sunny.
